We got private control of liquor sales in Washington State. The state seems to have retaliated because it slaps about a 40% tax on the price of every bottle.

Liquor Store Privatization

Happened in WA, so the legislature jacked the taxes something fierce.

Retailers mostly advertise their retail price, then shoppers get a shock when the outlandish state vigorish is added at checkout.

One of the boobs in our state House intro'd a bill to make retailers show only the total price so the state's rapacity would be hidden. Didn't pass last session, but I suspect it eventually will.
