Are you saying that all of the cities and towns there that have Spanish names today weren't populated? San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Jacinto...the list could last forever. Those all have Spanish names because they were founded by the Spanish and Mexico, and the residents there were citizens of Mexico. Just because the United States did not have them yet does not mean there was "no one there".
