<<<< And what does that have to do with today's immigration reform?>>>>

Nothing! But you said that prior to 1924 no one was excluded! That statement was false when you first said it - and it remains false today even as you try to divert the subject. Were people excluded before 1924? Was there a quota before 1924 on others?

It occurred to me I should explain why I know you are wrong.

My grandmother entered this country in 1922 when she was 76 years old. Her husband had died long ago and all her children except for one where in America. She sold everything she had and said goodbye to all her remaining larger family knowing she would never see them again. She made the trip in good shape but upon entering Ellis Island she was flagged. .......They were up against the quota you see. She was sent to the hospital (she had a fungus infection of her nails) and they took great care of her. She appealed her deportation - which of course meant she had to take the boat back to her country - but lost in the hearing. At the hearing her daughter who had been living in America for 9 years was also deported!! They said her mother couldn't make the trip by herself. The daughter had not achieved citizenship - that was hard if you weren't married. Since the daughter also had her 12 year old son with her - he too was deported!!!! All three were deported - told to go back. ..................To make a very long story short the three were in Ellis Island for over 6 weeks trying to figure out a way to stay - since the medical deportation was final. One dr suggested she could stay if they surgically removed her nails!!! Finally because the family had connections a US Senator intervened and she was allowed to stay. Not sure if she lost her nails or not.

There were many with the same story and many without a US Senator to make it happen - so they were forced to return. In researching this I found if you were what America wanted - you got in. If not many were sent packing.

How do I know all this? I have the records from Homeland Security (yes HS didn't exist back then - but they are now in control of the records). I have a complete record of the entire episode including in her own words the question and answers from the hearings! It's fascinating beyond belief. ..........AND that is why I know you are wrong - and why it is frustrating to hear you claim how easy it was to get into America back then.
