When Trimble went public in 1990, they had already shed their
(unprofitable) marine LORAN product-line (having been clobbered
by MicroLogic), and all product was GPS based.

Within the last 2-3 years, Trimble has ventured in to INMARSAT
and AMCC terminals (communications). They no longer depend
soley on GPS technology and are not a "pure-play".

I was being somewhat glib :-).. but Trimble may need to re-assess
its R&D projects to make sure they support new product development
in a timely enough fashion to counter Magellan in those areas
Trimble chooses to compete in. This could range from "no-effect"
to "buy someone".. my guess is it will only have moderate internal
scheduling effects.

The only major issue may be in the ORBCOOM area, as Magellan enjoys
a monopoly here. The question is.. will the ORBCOMM system be
accepted fast enough for Trimble to become interested and field
a product.
