Not if the person wants to be a scientist or an engineer or a CPA. Then not just any degree will do. You need specialized knowledge. And since most of the top jobs are science related, I'd like my kids to pay attention to where the demand is. The time you and I grew up in is gone. Now kids with non-science degrees are working at Starbucks and Target. I'm not paying 25k a year for something amorphous. I want my kids majoring in good careers with real demand. They can read on their own for actualization.

Didn't both your kids major in science? And isn't your son in law a scientist? Kids with science degrees do better. I think 9 of the top 10 careers- based on income and demand- are in engineering.
