<communism may have just been an idea ahead of its time>

I read Das Kapital in High School. I got half way through it and decided it was BS and unworkable. Certainly there has never been a group that has voluntarily given up power. The extraordinary claim that the Dictatorship of the Proletariat will dissolve after 5 years was bogus. The purported end game of Marx was a democracy where there was no power differences. Such a utopian system that lacks feedback mechanisms that plausibly cause its continuation is absurd. I don't believe in things for which there is little or no historical evidence. As Sagan said, "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof."

While the end-game of capitalism is feudal, communism with its alienation of individuals from the benefits of their personal achievements is its Achilles Heel. A social democracy that rewards personal achievement but places a limit to the material benefits that one person can accumulate over generational boundaries is sustainable. The economy of the Scandinavian countries shows that this can work. I think everyone has to have a shared set of values and a Balkanized multicultural mosaic without a core of shared values (education, civility, tolerance, shared viewpoints) is not stable. IMO.

Communism! Didn't someone try that?

You worry too much Koan. It's not the republicans you have to fear, it's bugs! Honest, a new bad bug will develop and because there are so many of us it will spread to everyone except those few who live on remote islands in Alaska. Then where will the pot come from?
