They said that the food banks in Montreal feed over 300,000 people and they were having a hard time keeping up with demand. As another poster has pointed out, it was a bunch of probably extremely left wing activists, who think that "government" should take care of everyone's needs, if not wants. I don't really want to get into a political discussion as this is the wrong forum and we are getting off the topic of the thread.
