"Well we have what looks like a huge discrepancy in data (surprise, surprise)."

There is no discrepancy in the data, whatsoever. There is a discrepancy between what the data in your link says and what you misunderstand it to say. Seriously, please read past the headline. Your link says Apple devices make more money than Android for a particular ad agency. Apple does not collect that revenue. Apple itself seems to make 20 times less than Google in mobile ads. These datapoints do not contradict each other in any way.

"Now, our discussion, I thought, was iOS vs. Android."

Actually, that was never the point of the discussion between you and Ryan. It was about Google doing a better job monetizing mobile users.

To address this point, Ryan, I would point out that Google has stated a goal of generating $10 per mobile user per year in revenue. At a run rate of $4B in the US (if accurate), they appear to have exceeded that goal by 2x. In comparison, Horace Dediu has done some fancy pants calculations to conclude that iTunes account holder spend $40 a year. That's not a bad way to monetize its users.

Incidentally, Google has said it makes more money from search from iOS than from Android. Not sure if that's still true. Not sure if it matters (to either this discussion or to Google).
