Gary, if telephony is your profession, I'm quite certain you don't need me to underscore Ericy's refusal to incorporate IS95 (CDMAOne) into their product line. First, they tell their customers that spread spectrum won't work, and that GSM/TDMA is the only standard on whcih to base telecom infrastructure, then they sue Qualcomm claiming that they invented CDMA, then they set aside the suit until 1/98, then they tell their customers that CDMA is so important to the future of wireless telephony that they are hard at work bringing out a new and improved version (WCDMA) which won't be backward compatible with IS95 but which would conveniently let Ericy avoid paying licensing fees to QCOM. It's all irrelevant in any event because Ericy has no chance to bring out their unique version of WCDMA in any commercially acceptable time frame, and nobody would buy it if they did. Ericy is now almost completed isolated in the telecom world because of an initial miscalculation of CDMA and then their Chairman's obstinancy in refusing to admit the mistake. Let's see, what's the lineup against Ericy: Nokia, Lucent, Motorola, Northern Telecom, Qualcomm (of course), ouch! On the other hand, Ericy still has the comfort of having that well known technology leader and cutting edge company on its side: Mother Bell, gosh I can smell the
apple pie cooking now. Regards, Mike Doyle
