Mike,

Thanks. That's exactly what I believe. ERICY's insistence on GSM was in retrospect the death knell for them IMO. CDMA has so much more bandwidth, and according to QCOM, they are developing a CDMA system that will be transparent (ie work with) GSM. IMO, no one in the world will deploy large GSM systems in the future.

I wouldn't include Nokia in the list however, they only manufacture the phones. NT, LU, MOT and QCOM are the real threats.

I work for NT. I liked your comment about the RBOC's. Over the last year or so, actually since telecom 96, the IOC's are the ones leading the implementation of new technology. The RBOC's find themselves in the unenviable postion of having to protect their market share to the extent that they are basically in a state of inaction. Still, they are a force to be treated with respect.

Regards,

Gary

Mike and All,

Interesting news tidbit on Telecom AM that reinforces what Mike has said:

--Company News--

ERICSSON TO CUT ANOTHER 10,000 JOBS IN NEXT TWO YEARS

Ericsson confirmed it will cut 10,000 more jobs in its
Infocom division over the next two years as part of a
restructuring plan begun in 1995. The company said it
already has cut 10,000 jobs to improve what it said was
unsatisfactory profitability caused by increased
competition, deregulation and technical development. The
affected division includes the former public telecom and
business network areas as well as activities pertaining to
radio access to fixed wireless networks.

Sorry if this off-subject stuff disturbs anyone. I apologize in advance.

Gary
