With the recent flurry of announcements from INTC and MSFT in this arena I'm beginning to think that things like the opencable initiative
opencable.com
were CRITICAL implementations to insure a level playing field for the looming war for eyeballs. Without it a lot of muscle would have been applied to win the entire field by the same names.

I reviewed the partners in the various alliances in the proposals.

The following companies responded to the RFI:
1.ÿ ÿ Microsoft 2.ÿ ÿ NextLevel, Inc. 3.ÿ ÿ Scientific-Atlanta Group IBM
Pioneer Electronics
PowerTV
Sun
Toshiba
4.ÿ ÿ Scientific-Atlanta (individual response) 5.ÿ ÿ Intel Group Cisco
Netscape
Network Computer Inc. (NCI)
Oracle
Thomson Consumer Electronic
6.ÿ ÿ Intel/NCI (individual response) 7.ÿ ÿ Oracle/NCI/Netscape
(individual response) 8.ÿ ÿ Thomson Consumer Electronics/NCI (individual
response) 9.ÿ ÿ Cisco (individual response) 10.Sony 11.Thomson Sun
(OpenTV) 12.Samsung 13.Pioneer Digital Technologies 14.ACTV/Sarnoff 15.
IBM (individual response) 16.Criterion Software 17.Lucent Technologies
18.SCM Microsystems 19.Zenith Electronics 20.Worldgate Communications
21.Texas Instruments 22.Wink Communications 23.Panasonic

ÿThe following companies have submitted information about their
interest and capabilities with respect to OpenCable:
1.Broadcom 2.Macrovision 3.RealNetworks 4.Interactive Channel 5.Alert
Systems Technology, Inc.

CUBE/DIVI are represented in several of the groups, but not in the INTC group.
CSCO must want in too, but not much news from them on this subject. Everybody keep your eyes open for any hints of what they have planned.
Could they be a future systems competitor? Since they seems to suck up co. so often maybe we should look for acquisitions in this area?

A seriously significant piece of DECODE technology

I wonder if Cube engineers are adding this to their line of MPEG-2 MP@ML products ? It would seem absolutely necessary to compete
in the settop box market... (better phone Alex)

Intel software article (the mysterious reason behind their dropping out of the Microsoft DTV Consortium):

In my humble opinion, the Intel settop PC announcement is the single biggest piece of news in the decoder business this year.
