public roads and public schools and the agencies that protect our food.
Do you want to do away with those things. Not inspect the food? Have no rules and regulations for cities?
Do you want to do away with the police and fire departments, emergency medical services, ambulances, emergency rooms?
All of the above things are socialist.

If government was limited to doing things like that it would be VERY small compared to what it is today. I have never met a socialist that wanted a small government.

The American system is not a democracy. It is a constitutional republic. A democracy, if you attach meaning to terms, is a system of unlimited majority rule . . . a form of collectivism, which denies individual rights . . . . The American system is a constitutionally limited republic, restricted to the protection of individual rights. In such a system, majority rule is applicable only to lesser details, such as the selection of certain personnel. But the majority has no say over the basic principles governing the government. It has no power to ask for or gain the infringement of individual rights.

We talk about democratic socialism: i.e. like public roads and public schools and the agencies that protect our food.
You also demand free govt provided healthcare, free education for everyone for as long as they want to avoid working, a "living wage" for everyone even if their contribution is worth less than that. There has never been a govt welfare program which you didn't want to expand. Socialism, if successful, is indistinguishable from communism, and requires totalitarian centralized control which is the opposite of democracy.
