I started buying into Nextel (Fleet Call) about 3 and a half years ago after the MCI deal fell through. I researched it on an airplane flight to Las Vegas on my way to try out for the U.S. table tennis (ping pong) team, which at that time was an annual occurence for me. Knowing how easily a police scanning receiver could be modified to receive the 870-890 MHz band (many of my friends are "hams", it looked like digital might have a slight advantage. But the frequency compression of digital is the bigger advantage. This meant that a wireless carrier with a national footprint (even if it only has 10 MHz of airspace (as opposed to 50 MHz for the duopoly) would be comparable to ALL THE CELLULAR COMPANIES IN THE U.S. COMBINED (only people couldn't listen in). Nextel hasn't even advertised its laptop capabilities yet, but privacy is every bit as much important with data transmission. I didn't make the U.S. team that year but I did buy some very nice real estate in the sky. P.S.: Arnie, how many Billions did BelSouth pay just for Brazil again? .....vert comforting, isn't it?
