Christine, if you were born in 1840 and your parents told you over and over that Blacks were NOT human beings and your aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins, friends, neighbors and school teachers told you that Blacks were NOT human beings would you think that Blacks were human beings by 1861? The point is the South did'nt think there was anything wrong with owning slaves because most of them honestly believed that Blacks were not human beings. Why do you ALWAYS judge people based on your morals and values of 1997 instead of looking at the issue objectively in their time period? Jim
