tim, w/o Hp 3000's compaq would never be where it is today.
IBM tried to convince us a mini couldn't do it, but I was posiitve I could deploy a cluster of hp-3000's and servers into a world wide network. Of course cpq had to invent how HP's could cluster an MRPII
system.
All cpq ww was at one time hp3000's and they were networked easily since the other 3 plants all had the exact same MRPII system.
Had HWP selected ASK computer MRPII system they would be light yrs ahead of where they are now...
Of course we were the first to exist on just HP3000's then hp did away with all their amdahls and IBM MF's in the mid 80's.
In 1983-84 you could only log 50 people on an HP 3000 and it shut down.... but, HP worked with us and can accept allot of credit
for pioneering fortune 500 compnaies existing on only HP's and no MF's.

Now, Tandem people and DEC people...until about 1985 their wasn't a decent MRPII system on dec/s and it was barely adequate. And Tandem didn't get a decent MRPII system for a long time...
I think RESPOND is tandems MRPII system.
both of these were inferior to the ASK system.
It was the ASK system on DEC in mid 80's but that version wasn't as mature as the HP version.
BUt, w/o HP's CPQ wouldn't have made it so easily..
Of course now cpq will migrate to clinet server and SAP .
they are close to doing singapore and scotland and houston...
singapore may be doing it now.
