Unfortunately, theistic evolutionists who make these claims are guilty of the same carelessness as Dr. David Bentley Hart: they haven’t read St. Augustine’s own writings on the subject. Instead, they’ve read essays and scholarly commentariesinstead of sitting down and reading the texts themselves. If they did that, they would discover that St. Augustine expressly taught that the world was 6,000 years old ( City of God, Book XII, chapter 12); that creatures of all kinds were created instantly at the beginning of time; that Adam and Eve were historical persons; that Paradise was a literal place; that the patriarch Methusaleh actually lived to the age of 969; that there was a literal ark, and that the Flood covered the whole earth; and that he vigorously defended all of these doctrines against skeptics in the fourth century (yes, they existed back then, too), who scoffed at them. The curious reader can confirm what I have read by consulting St. Augustine’s City of God Book XIII and Book XV. Oh yeah, your characterization of the City of God as an ESSAY .... it took Augustine 13 years to write, takes serious readers about 6 months to read, is divided into 22 books. No, you haven't read Augustine, especially not as a chld wondering where the name of a nearby city came from.

"There's plenty to criticise of both their conclusions,but this wasn't "classical Christian" thought" As always, Brum misses the whole point of getting an education which is the ability to think and reason and form rational opinions. He thinks it is to agree with the author--typical viewpoint of an ignorant man. Aristotle knew less about Science than any fifth grader today. But he was a brilliant thinker and if one has not read his works (You can be sure that Brum has not), then one is impoverished. Wherever one travels in Western culture, the Augustine name and influence are present. And, of course, through Luther (ironically) he became (according to many scholars) the father of Protestantism! Luther, of course, was educated for 20 years as an Augustinian Monk. Life is full of irony! But uneducated Nims like greg or ee and Brum miss most all of it!
