customers at Semicon! They talk to the entire market for their products on a day to
day basis."

You seem to be missing a major point: ALL DEVICE MANUFACTURERS WHO PURCHASE DUV STEPPERS ARE EITHER CYMER CUSTOMERS OR KOMATSU/LP CUSTOMERS.

On the surface, this is true, but Cymer's real customers are the fab guys. Cymer needs to get those guys to ask for Cymer by name (Cymer Inside). Nikon keeps talking about having Komatsu as a "2nd source." This would be very bad for Cymer. Cymer needs to create enough of a marketing impression that customers would reject the notion that Nikon would choose what laser is inside their stepper/scanner. When you buy a PC, you don't care what DRAM they put in it. The result is that DRAM has low margins. You do care what processor is inside.

Cymer needs to sew fear in the minds of the fab guys. Fear that if they don't get a Cymer laser, they will be using risky technology. Intel doesn't worry about marketing to Compaq and Dell. They know that the key is the end user. Cymer is in the same boat.

I don't know that dancing girls are the answer, but an investment in marketing to the end user (the fab engineer) is worthwhile for Cymer.
