Do you honestly believe that welfare came first and then single parents in the projects?
Yup.

You might want to read up on the Great Migration........when blacks left the rural South in large numbers because the Jim Crow South was a bad place in which to live and kept them mired in poverty. They moved north to work in northern factories:

en.wikipedia.org

The first leg was between 1910 and 1930; the second leg was between 1940 and 1970. Blacks were trying to make a better life for themselves in the North. They left their cultural roots and family ties and essentially migrated with just the shirts on their backs. They were dirt poor. The numbers of blacks moving north were significant, creating housing shortages. The projects were built to accommodate this migration. Because of northern discrimination, blacks became concentrated in ghettos.

By the 1970s, the industrial jobs which had held so much promise were disappearing. Black males could not support their families. Drugs and gangs became pervasive. Black men left their families because they couldn't provide. Black women turned to welfare to keep their families afloat.

You have the order backwards. Your observation reflects a bias that exists among many whites............that black men are lazy......ditto for black women; that they prefer to be on welfare. More whites need to learn about black history in this country. They need to understand how centuries of slavery and discrimination did extensive psychological damage to an entire race. Whites are way too glib when it comes to their explanation of the black experience in this country. That's got to stop if we want to make some serious progress.
