No we are behind the other western democracies because we are isolated and overly influenced by Christianity.

The other western democracies have the benefit of cultural diffusion. Most people speak more than one language and religion plays a much smaller role in their politics.

You are being romantic and seeing a fantasy.

I don't think one can compare America's political system to other Western Democracies because of our unique historical emphasis on the "rugged individual" and the rights that accompany him/her. We were molded differently and think differently than those other countries and what works fo them won't fit in our country/culture--at least not yet.

We need to find an American way forward.

There is no such thing as "the American way". Two Presidents from modern times, from different political parties have signaled to us that the principle of yesteryears that was uniquely American no longer holds true. Hence they have solidly stood behind the concept that other democracies have already embraced which is that we will have to give some of our liberties and privacies for our security.
