No, women had to hang in there with a marriage and this taught kids a number of things.

1. You better not rush into a marriage because once into it you were in it for life.

2. Relationships meant you had to work at them and take them seriously.

3. Kids grew up with a role mode of a Father who had to go to work and support them and boys knew this was going to be their job as men.

4. And families watched out for their young women so they wouldn't become damaged goods.

Yes, this restricted adults freedoms, but you didn't have many kids being raised by single parents--at least not in the white middle class.
