But when a store that sells thousands and thousands of hard drives a year tells you that WD is the highest failure rate, I take note on that.

I have had a pile of drives die on me over they years. Didn't keep track of what manufacture, but I am sure there is a Seagate in there.

The topic was USB external drives.

I have four internal and three external 3.5 drives. They are a mix of Seagate and WD. The oldest is at least 3 yrs., the youngest about 4 months. The youngest, a 2 GB USB3 WD gave me problems after I purchased it as a "bare drive" from New Egg:

After many weeks of dealing with WD, including three 2 GB replacements, they finally sent me a 3 GB as a goodwill gesture. Although I could only access 2 GB of the 3 GB drive, I had to use it because the one it replaced was full and I needed to get some work done.

What did I learn? Although I have had positive experiences with OEM or "bare discs" in the past, I will probably not take a chance on one again. They are likely all refurbished drives. When I asked WD they confirmed that all of the replacements they sent me were refurbished drives, packaged identically to the one I bought from New Egg. Every drive WD sent had supposedly passed all of their QC and performance tests. Funny that none of them passed the WD drive tests recommended by WD and available as software downloads on the WD site.

I'll stick with retail packaging or drives installed as part of a new system.

Sorry for the long-winded post.
