NextLevel , Cisco in modem pact Reuters Story - December 08, 1997 16:11 %DPR %US %BUS %PUB %ELC NLV CSCO V%REUTER P%RTR SAN DIEGO, Calif., Dec. 8 (Reuters) - NextLevel Systems and Cisco Systems Inc on Monday agreed to develop two-way cable modem products. pairing leaders of the cable broadband transmission and telecommunications networking industries. In a joint statement, the companies said they would base their products on an industry standard technology known as the Multimedia Cable Network System (MCNS) Data over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS). Released in March 1997, the DOCSIS specification calls for the interoperability of cable modems and associated networks manufactured by different suppliers. Interoperability, in turn, speeds time to market for products, reduces risk for equipment purchasers and consumers, and creates economies of scale for network operators. The announcement comes on the eve of the Western Show this week in Anaheim, Calif., one of the cable television industry's largest trade shows. Cable modems and interactivity between TV viewers and broadcasters via cable television are expected to be two of the most widely discussed subjects at the show.
