If you're looking for a great hard drive... For historical reasons I generally dislike IBM, but their Deskstar 5 (6.4GB) drive is outstanding. It is rated at 9.5 msec access time, but mine consistently turns in 8.5-8.6 msec on various benchmarks. It also has an excellent sustained (uncached) transfer rate of 3.1 MB/sec on my machine according to Wintune97. By contrast, "other" UDMA drives I returned to the store could not exceed 2.5 MB/Sec. It is so quiet you have to strain to hear the head seek from three feet away. When I first applied power I thought it was broken because I could not hear the discs spin up. Most important is it's competitive price of $329 at Computer City. Maybe it's time for me to sell my WDC stock and buy (yeck!) IBM.
