My best guess is that the NSF funding for such work is less than zero at the moment. I haven't looked but I would expect it's been the target of Republican cuts. And who knows just how badly sequestration hit it.

Wrong political climate for serious research.

Yes, but we don't stop advocating for such just because one party is not on board for it. Call them out on it.
