Our college administrators argued that while folk with BAs in the liberal arts received lower paying starting salaries than those from pre professional programs, over the longer haul they did better. Because their education made them more intellectually agile. I was always slightly offended at the arguments since the basic argument for the liberal arts had nothing to do with making more money and everything to do with understanding your life better. But it's easy enough to understand why administrators would offer this up.
