PRESS DIGEST - Brazil - Dec 8

SAO PAULO, Dec 8 (Reuters) - These are the highlights of the main Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro newspapers
this morning.

GAZETA MERCANTIL

-- MICROSOFT STARTS DOOR-TO-DOOR SALES

Microsoft's Brazil unit has begun a door-to-door sales strategy targeting small firms. The strategy is in line with
Microsoft's worldwide goal of increasing corporate clients.

============================================================

Novell just dosen't get it. I got the impression from Don's email from Novell that they really don't want the small business. Just my impression. I wonder how Dr Schmidt spells Compaq? As far as MSFT not recognizing Novell as competition...seems like Novell feels likewise. I wonder what kind of "need a boost" products Novell is looking to aquire? Cut into that 1 billion for a new product to market? Is this some kind of joke?

On another note...do I understand correctly that they are forcing the issue with 3.x users with the whatever pack? Do they have to purchase this software to function as 2000 creeps closer?

If MOAB fails in its quest to become the dominant operating system or at least to capture 20% of the market share in server O/S next year, NOVL has had it....as far as the stock price is concerned.

I believe that our Dr. is far to optimistic on believing that he will sell NetWare 5.x on the JAVA "aware"/TCP feature . I think personally that he is in this for himself. He has turned NOVELL into a test ground if that is what you want to call it. Corel failed. Lotus based Java apps. are not too hot so what makes everyone think that NetWare 5.0 will do any better ?

If NOVL succeeds solely on its JAVA based outlook (which I doubt at this stage), he gains a lot of respect in terms of stock options. If he fails, he has nothing to lose as I am sure Scott McNealy will lay out the red carpet once again...but only for him.
NOVELL for SUNW is ground zero....the place where you drop the H-bomb and hope it explodes into mega-sales.

NOVL is still too dependent on a single product - NetWare and can not seem to get away from it. A MOAB failure automatically translates to a low stock price.

I think we will stay in the $7 1/2 - $12 1/2 trading range for the time being and that eventually Wallstreet is going to hand NOVL over to a big player at a lower price than we expect.

The idea of running JAVA based apps. however is beginning to appeal to me. I'm going to take a shot at the beta over the next two weeks.
