No, they swear an oath to defend the Constitution, but are only answerable to the people of their district and their own consciences.

You talk endlessly about democracy, but fail to grasp the essential nature of the US govt. The US Senate is one of the least democratic institutions imaginable. It is not the United People of America, it is the United States of America. Many US citizens are not represented at all: Wash DC, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, US Virgin Islands. They have the protections of US citizens, but unless they live in one of the states, their rights to participate in national govt are limited.
