Everybody calm down about Syria. Just remember if George W. Bush was still president, we would have

Sure.

Yes, the world set the red line. So let the world enforce it.

I have no problem being part of a NATO coalition.

We are risking WWIII here.

Beside's that, if the gas gets loose how do we secure that stuff without boots on the ground??

Let him, or someone who is for bombing answer that.

<<Let me unpack the question. First of all, I didn’t set a red line.

The world set a red line.

The world set a red line when governments representing 98 percent of the world’s population said the use of chemical weapons are abhorrent and passed a treaty forbidding their use even when countries are engaged in war.

That is the case

...and it isn't Assad on trial

We know his crimes

We are now looking at enablers and, effectively, co-conspirators and accessories after-the-fact..

Is that really who we are now?

I know you hate to hear stuff against Obama.

But maybe it will not seem so crazy to you if you know Elijah Cummings seems to take my position and he said 99% of the calls coming to his office say the same.

Bernie Sanders said the same thing, as has Ed.

he tocks a lot about the international community and that's all noble stuff.
but the question before us is unilateral military action by the USA.
this is a UN matter. if there is no healthy UN, every person on the planet
should work toward making that happen and setting up the decision
making rules in a manner that's fair to all countries and respectful of
humanity, the planet and the future.

prez needs to listen to his own words and work harder to involve the
international community. the chemical weapons issue is the perfect
excuse for him. if we have to create a new UN to do it, we should
get started. ultimately, it's the only way to address international events
problems, crimes, disasters and emergencies.

prez sez:

"But I think America also recognizes that if the international community fails to maintain certain norms,
standards and laws governing how countries interact and how people are treated, that over time, this
world becomes less safe."

international anarchy is not working. world's getting too tiny and hot.

I am so over the place on my opinion of what is the best thing to do. Someone posted a piece on how liberals are having internal dialogues: "on the one hand this and on the other that." I've been doing this all week.

This answer by Obama in the post that I'm responding to impacted me. He is not W and although there are some similarities in this situation to 03(Maureen Dowd), who is POTUS could not be more different, imo.

This response by a very liberal friend of a friend who was upset with today's Senate Panel's decision also impacted me:

"Don't start fighting with me. I don't like to argue on Facebook. Just giving my opinion. Not saying I'm right... but time and again I think Obama has proven that he's smarter than us. He takes the long view. This isn't Iraq. This is more like Sarajevo. Now, as then, hundreds of thousands being killed by a ruthless dictator. Bad guys on both sides of the Bosnian conflict, but one murderer, Milosovic, stands and continues to kill. This is that. Doctors Without Borders have described the events in Syria. There are two million refugees. This one isn't about oil. Do we look away, like in Rwanda? I don't know the answer, but I'm uncomfortable taking my normal pacifist position on this one. Everything Obama does is measured. It's a difficult decision. It's the world's toughest job. He's followed the constitution by letting congress decide. I'm sorry, but he's earned my trust. I'm just sayin."

I have no wisdom to add to this debate. I wish for all of us some consolation that some how we will get thru this one too----no matter which way it goes.
