Vet stands up to Pentagon over cheap recordings of 'Taps' at military funerals...

Personally plays trumpet at more than 5,000 send-offs...

Berwyn, Ill.

Tom Day is not a man given to extravagance. He thinks he’s living high on a reporter’s nickel if he orders a beef sandwich to go at the local Buona sub shop. He shops at Goodwill every Sunday, hoping to pick up bargains, like his handsome $35 suits. But if there’s one superfluity that Day especially can’t abide, it is that of empty rhetoric.

They are words that actually require something of him, the dwindling resource you can’t buy more of: time. For the 73-year-old former Marine serves those who serve. Or rather, he serves those who have served. Day is the man who, both on his own and through the 7,500-plus volunteers in the organization he founded, Bugles Across America, has saved the tradition of playing live “Taps” at military funerals.

When Day was a 10-year-old kid, steeped in the thriving drum and bugle corps culture of mid-century Chicago, he first volunteered to blow “Taps” for a returning Korean War casualty. Since then, he has personally played over 5,000 funerals. All on his own, with no recompense from the military or from the family for whom he is playing. On average, he estimates, it costs him about five hours for every funeral, from the time he turns the ignition in his driveway until the time he returns home.

He always arrives early to “find my echo” (sizing up the acoustics of the church or cemetery for desired effect), though “in 5,000 funerals,” he says, “I think only four were on time.” And then there’s the additional time he spends practicing his bugle, getting a haircut, polishing his brass, shining his shoes, making sure there’s no finger-print smudges on the bill of his lid.

It’s essential to “be squared away,” as he puts it, ever the Marine, in order to pay proper respect both to the deceased and their families. Doing the math, one figures Day has spent a good three solid years of his life standing at the gravesides of strangers, blowing the last 24 notes they’ll ever have played for them above ground.

But what to some might seem like a nice gesture was transformed into high calling in 2000. It was then that federal legislation passed stipulating that every honorably discharged veteran had the right to at least two uniformed military personnel to fold and present the flag, and to sound “Taps” at their funeral. Day thought this was good. The bad news, the fine print added, was that if a bugler could not be found, a recording should be used.

Finding a live bugler proved a mathematical impossibility. With 1,800 vets dying every day (at one point, World War II veterans were dying at the rate of one every two minutes), the military had only 500 buglers to share the load. Day estimates there’s considerably fewer now, with general cutbacks and sequestration. Honor guards were thus initially directed to bring boom boxes to funerals, looking to stealthily place CD players behind tombstones, as they prayed the disc didn’t skip or scratch, that the batteries didn’t fail, or worst of all, that instead of “Taps,” they hit the wrong track and accidentally played “Reveille.” “Sounds funny, but it’s happened,” Day growls.

To add greater insult, the Defense Department then introduced what it calls “ceremonial bugles.” In the venerable Pentagon procurement tradition of the $435 hammer or the $600 toilet seat, the digital bugles cost $530 a throw, and many purists/people-with-taste consider them abominations. Day’s volunteers, when they call them anything printable, tend to refer to these as “fake bugles,” while Day himself just calls it “The Device.” As one Navy musician tells me, “This is it, it’s the last song. Your veteran is dead. And it looks like you’re playing him off with something from Toys’R’Us.”

Rollie Chance, misidentified as Navy Yard shooter, demands media accountability
...............................................................................................................................................
By Tom Jackman, Friday, September 20, 2013
washingtonpost.com

Rollie Chance was home in Stafford, about 40 miles south of Washington, when he began watching the news about the shootings at the Washington Navy Yard Monday morning. A retired Navy lieutenant, he had worked in Building 197 on the fourth floor and was worried that some of his friends and former colleagues might have been killed.

Then shortly after noon, he got a phone call from someone who said they were with ABC News. “They asked me if I knew Rollie Chance,” Rollie Chance said. “Then they said, ‘Did you know Rollie Chance was the perpetrator of the Washington Navy Yard shootings?’”

Chance, 50, thought the call was a joke. He told the caller, “I guarantee you 100 percent Rollie Chance didn’t do it,” and hung up.

Moments later, FBI agents arrived at his home. Soon after, reporters began piling up at the curb.

And on Twitter, reporters for both NBC and CBS named Chance as the now-deceased killer.

CBS also identified Chance on national radio. ABC, which called Chance, did not report any connection.

The two network news outlets quickly retracted their tweets and CBS corrected its radio report. But Chance is wondering how he will ever erase the accusatory Internet trail that led to his door and is trying to work through days of anxiety for his family, including his 9-year-old daughter, whom he held out of school for a day.

“Verify before you vilify,”
Chance implored in an interview Friday with his lawyer Mark Cummings.

He joined a list of innocent people wrongly connected to high-profile crimes, to include the brother of the Newtown school shooter, two Boston men wrongly linked to the Boston Marathon bombings, and security guard Richard Jewell at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics bombing.

“We reported what we learned from law enforcement sources and it was corrected within minutes,” said Sonya McNair, senior vice president of communications for CBS News. NBC News officials said in a statement: “We received misinformation from reliable sources and immediately corrected.”

Chance’s name filtered to the media because one of his identification cards reportedly was found near the body of Aaron Alexis, the man actually responsible for the shootings. Chance said he has no idea how that happened, and that he had not been in Building 197 since October, when he turned in two military access cards to his division head and went on administrative leave from his civilian job as an engineering technician.

“I don’t know Aaron Alexis,” Chance said. “I’d never heard of Aaron Alexis. I’ve never met Aaron Alexis.”

He said FBI agents questioned him thoroughly, then searched his home with his consent. “I was trying to be cooperative,” he said.

Chance is a Brooklyn native who rose from enlisted man to lieutenant in a 24-year Navy career, serving on amphibious assault ships such as the USS Nassau and the USS Bataan, before retiring from active duty in 2008. He then worked four more years as a civilian engineer in Naval Sea Systems Command at the Navy Yard. “I would never think about hurting my friends, those guys in Building 197,” he said. “I worked with them for years.”

He said if he had falsely accused someone in the Navy, he would be held accountable. “The media should have a certain amount of accountability,” he said.

Chance worried about his prospects in seeking a job, with employers checking him on Google. “To my knowledge, there’s no way to scrub this,” he said.

Chance said he was speaking publicly because “I don’t want anyone to go through this. I wouldn’t want my worst enemies to go through what I went through.”

Another Republican-Supporting Business Raided: Suspicion of Using Mongolian Wood
...................................................................................

Saturday, September 28, 2013
thegatewaypundit.com

Thursday, Federal agents raided Lumber Liquidators.

Lumber Liquidators advertises heavily on The Rush Limbaugh Show and even put in the flooring for one of Rush’s studios.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports:

Agents from the Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Department of Justice executed the search warrant at the company’s headquarters and plant near Williamsburg, said Brandon Montgomery, a spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security.

The reason for the raid? Suspicion of using Mongolian Wood. Mongolian wood, apparently, is an imminent threat to Homeland Security.

Two years ago, Federal agents raided Republican-owned Gibson Guitars on another wood-related charge: They might have used wood from India that wasn’t finished by Indian workers.

Rather than go through an expensive and protracted legal suit, Gibson settled with the government and paid $300,000 plus $50,000 to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.

No one believed Lois Lerner and the IRS were targeting Tea Party organizations until they admitted it to Congress.

How many more Republican-supporting businesses will be raided before Congress steps in?

UK government: Muslim Brotherhood membership not proof of “extremism,” Brotherhood activists free to operate in UK

Robert Spencer Feb 6, 2014

So Britain bans Pamela Geller and me from entering the country,
even though we have never advocated anything but the freedom of speech, the freedom of conscience, and equality of rights for all people.

The letter to me from the UK Home Office said that I was being banned for saying that Islam has a doctrine of warfare against unbelievers, which is simply a true statement.

They let in Muhammad al-Arefe, who has said: “Devotion to jihad for the sake of Allah, and the desire to shed blood, to smash skulls, and to sever limbs for the sake of Allah and in defense of His religion, is, undoubtedly, an honor for the believer. Allah said that if a man fights the infidels, the infidels will be unable to prepare to fight.” They let in Hungarian anti-Semitic pro-jihad fascist Gabor Vona.

And now they are allowing to live and work in Britain members of an organization that is dedicated in its own words, according to a captured internal Brotherhood document, to “eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within and ‘sabotaging’ its miserable house by their hands and the hands of the believers so that it is eliminated and God’s religion is made victorious over all other religions.” This organization is dedicated a terrorist group by the Egyptian government, and has been widely implicated in the terrorizing of Christians and the destruction of numerous churches in that country.

That’s fine with the Cameron government. Britain puts out the welcome mat for such people.

But if you oppose jihad terror and Sharia oppression, stay out.

“Membership or link to Muslim Brotherhood not proof of extremism: UK,” by Amer Sultan for Ahram Online, February 5 (thanks to Jerk Chicken):

The UK government has expressed its conviction that membership or links to the Muslim Brotherhood is not proof of extremism, adding that Brotherhood activists are free to operate in the UK so long as they respect its national laws.

A number of Brotherhood leaders and activists who fled to the UK following the ouster of Egypt’s Islamist president Mohamed Morsi are politically and publicly active against the military-backed government in Egypt.

“The UK allows members of all political groups to operate freely, provided they do not break UK law or immigration rules,” the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) told Ahram Online.

“Muslim Brotherhood [members are] subject to the same immigration rules as everyone else,” the official added.

London had rejected the Egyptian government’s designation of the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organisation, insisting the group is legal in the UK.

Furious about Brotherhood activists being allowed to reside in, and operate from, UK soil, Egyptian media figures and politicians have accused the UK government of promoting terrorism and extremism.

The FCO spokesman, however, confirms that “membership or links to the Muslim Brotherhood in the UK are not considered, in themselves, proof of extremism, or links to extremist activity,” asserting that his country takes any extremist activity in the UK “very seriously.”

“Extremist or illegal behaviour will be challenged and those whose presence here is not welcome will be excluded,” the spokesman added.

While confirming it does not support any political party in Egypt, the UK government said it encourages an inclusive political system which represents all groups in society, including the Muslim Brotherhood, as the “best way to serve stability and security, in the long run, in Egypt.”

WTVJ Apologizes for ‘Reprehensive Party of Florida’ Graphic
..............................................................................
5 February, 2014
sfltv.com

WTVJ ran a story during its 6pm newscast last Thursday in which one of the full-screen graphics identified the Florida GOP as the ‘Reprehensive Party of Florida’ instead of ‘Republican Party of Florida’. It turned out that WTVJ got the graphic from Capitol News Service in Tallahassee, and both news outlets had to apologize. One Capitol News Service was fired, and another one left.

The Republican Party of Florida responded strongly, accusing WTVJ of slander

“This blatant disregard for journalist ethics and impartiality is a complete abdication of your station’s professional duty to truth at best and slander at worst. We are currently reviewing our legal options against your station, but at minimum we demand an on-air apology for violating journalist ethics and public discipline for any employees responsible for the creation of this graphic,”

WTVJ issued a statement apologizing for the incident

“We apologize to the Republican Party of Florida and to our viewers for our airing of a wrong graphic in a news story in last night’s 6 p.m. newscast. The story came to us from a news service we use out of Tallahassee that we have relied on for years with no issues. We do, however, know it was our responsibility to catch the graphic and we regret that we did not prevent it from airing. We are addressing this with our employees to ensure something like this doesn’t happen again. Once again, we sincerely regret this incident.”

Trenton Mayor Tony Mack found guilty on all counts in federal corruption trial

Times of Trenton NJ.com ^ | February 7, 2014

Tony Mack, elected in 2010, took bribe money from the purported developers of a parking garage downtown. The jury found that Mack used his official influence as mayor to agree to sell the city-owned lot where the developers sought to build the garage at below market value in exchange for cash. The developers – Harry Seymour and his local representative Lemuel Blackburn – were working in cooperation with the FBI for the sting operation targeting Mack. On several occasions either Seymour, a residential and commercial developer from North Jersey, or Blackburn, a former city attorney who worked as former Mayor Douglas Palmer’s personal counsel, met with Mack supporter Joseph “JoJo” Giorgianni and others to discuss the particulars of the deal. During those meetings, Seymour and Blackburn were wearing hidden FBI recording devices, capturing every moment on audio and video.

The FBI also had a wiretap recording phone calls made and received by Giorgianni, the mayor and admitted co-conspirator Charles Hall III, who at the time was working in City Hall put in charge of running the recreation department, even though he was hired to be a meter reader for the city’s water utility.

Mack accepted cash for the project through Giorgianni, who gave the money to Ralphiel Mack to give to his brother.

In recordings played in court, Giorgianni said the buffers insulated the mayor from suspicion about accepting illicit cash.

Both Mack brothers and Giorgianni were arrested on Sept. 10, 2012, and a six-count indictment followed.

Tony and Ralphiel Mack were both convicted of conspiracy to obstruct and affect interstate commerce by extortion under color of official right, attempted obstructing and affecting interstate commerce by extortion under color of official right, and agreeing to accept bribes.

Tony Mack also was found guilty of two counts of wire fraud and one count of mail fraud.

Just weeks before the trial was set to begin, Giorgianni pleaded guilty, admitting he handed cash to the mayor at his sandwich shop in the spring of 2012, shortly before the FBI made public its investigation.

Tony and Ralphiel Mack maintained their innocence and sought to stand trial to be exonerated. During the trial, their attorneys cross-examined several government witnesses including Hall, Giorgianni’s caretaker and former city housing director Carmen Melendez. Tony Mack’s attorney Mark Davis did not call any witnesses of his own, but Ralphiel Mack’s attorney Robert Haney called one witness – Terry Birchenough -- a friend of Mack’s to testify that the mayor’s brother, who at the time was working as a guidance counselor and football coach, asked him for a loan.

Tony Mack has previously said he would not step down as mayor. Now that the jury has found he is guilty, if Mack does not resign his post, the state office of the Attorney General may seek to have a state judge force Mack to forfeit the office. City Council will select an interim mayor to serve until a new mayor is elected this May.

"This protracted case has resulted in an unfortunate and unfair distraction for the City of Trenton for far too long. It has put a dark cloud over Trenton, and frankly, the entire region," said Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes. "Justice has been served and now it is time to move on, and to look forward to a brighter future.”

Rep. Joe Wilson was right.

.....................................................................................
thegatewaypundit.com

The South Carolina Congressman screamed, “You lie!” when Barack Obama told Americans the Affordable Care Act would not cover abortions or illegal immigrants.

Now we know – Obamacare covers illegal immigrants.

125,000 illegal immigrants will be eligible for free healthcare under Medi-Cal, California’s Medicaid expansion.
The LA Times reported:

A new report shows that as many as 125,000 young California immigrants may qualify for an expansion of Medi-Cal, the state’s Medicaid program.

The Affordable Care Act bars insurance subsidies and enrollment in the Medicaid expansion for undocumented immigrants, but a wrinkle in California rules does offer coverage for those with “deferred action status.”

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program was created by President Obama in 2012 to grant immigrants who came to the country illegally as children — sometimes called Dreamers — legal status and work authorization for two-year periods.

Laurel Lucia, a policy analyst at the UC Berkeley Labor Center and author of the report released Tuesday, said California is one of the few states that lets youth with deferred action status enroll in Medicaid.

“But the word still hasn’t been spread,” she said.

The report found that 154,000 people in California had been granted the status as of December 2013. About 81%, or 125,000, are eligible for Medi-Cal based on their annual income, which has to be less than $15,850 for an individual.
