In addition to the Sony HiFD vaporware, I think we should also look at the Caleb drive as possible competition to the Zip. Apparently it's 144MB and backward compatible. Yeah, not too impressive, but apparently the initial OEM pricing is to be $55, and the disks are to be about $4 each--pretty cheap. Of course Zip does have such a big advantage in installed base, and I don't think backward compatibility is worth much, but apparently there are lots of people out there who care about backward compatibility. Otherwise, why do all of these companies keep making backward compatible drives? OTOH, maybe these companies are just clueless.

I am a little dissatisfied with how fast Zip has made it into OEM's this year--I was expecting much more by now (like >50% of new computers, with the Zip drive licensees producing full blast). Guess it's just going to take longer than I thought.

Re: Castlewood

Zead, The new company is Castlewood Systems and the product is the Orb. It uses MR heads, not GMR heads. Complete details can be found at their website:

castlewoodsystems.com

If they can get their product out quickly (scheduled for the first qtr-98, in sufficiant quantity, and get around Syquest's lawsuits, then it will certainly impact SparQ sales and probably Jaz and SyJet as well. On paper, the Orb's specs look very good. At $29.95 for a 2.16 GB disk, the price is even better.

Syquest's original founder was indeed the one who started Castlewood. He made his fair share of mistakes running Syquest and it will be interesting to see if he'll repeat them or has learned by them. As a start-up, they still have a tough road ahead, however I'll be keeping a close eye on them.
