Sorry this is off topic, but does anyone have any info on Star Ventures. I haven't been able to find a web site for them. Shlomi you mentioned that Siemens is investing through them. Is star a Siemens company? Thanks!

Ishmael

distribution partner .......

Hi Shlomi,

>>...they are going to sign a distribution agreement with one of the biggest in the market, that Tamir said, covers also Europe...<<<

Suppose it could still be on the order of either 3com or boca research... and while a boca research would be just fine.... 3 com/orctf has a nice ring to it... :)

When i first started thinking about this it seemed like a stretch.... ... but am starting to convince myself that there might be something to it... <g>..

Think coms becomes more likely the wider the agreement might be... if it's xdsl all flavors/cable modems, well, maybe.... Next generation orctf silicon all looks like it is going to be very competitive and maybe top of the class...

Would think a special relationship with either/all Fujitsu, Harris, and Rockwell as xdsl silicon suppliers might be on the order of a 3com...

And just to add a little more interest... as you said, there is potentially also cable modem silicon up for grabs thru Ultracom.

If and when the xdsl deployment starts (99?), numbers involved could add up quickly.

So far orctf has been coming up with big names for partners... would think a special relationship for modems (any or all xdsl flavors) would also require some stature... ;)

And this party might be supplying siemens' vdsl modems.

Lots possibilities besides coms, but starting there (at the top of the list)...

3com and siemens have a strategic alliance...
3com could handle any quantity of product flow...
3com just announced a relationship with Rockwell for cable modem silicon...
3com has usrx which has scorpio (atm) which was an orctf "partner co" in 95...
3com's archrivals Hayes and Ascend will soon be getting cool new adsl silicon from mietec (ala)...
3com's announced adsl TI silicon has never been tested/trialed...
3com's relationship with TI is showing signs of stress fractures...
3com needs xdsl expertise as much talent has left for startups...
3com seriously needs a strategy/partnership to translate their current dominance in the modem market to xdsl/cable.

The problem with coms is that they look more likely to opt for adi/awre (if they break from ti)... Would think performance/price of next generation silicon might be the key...

In any case, should be an interesting 98 ...

thanks again,
s

strategic dividends ....

Hi Shlomi

Orctf's european strategy of each country with best country-specific partner, does make a lot of sense... and looks like its paying dividends... No doubt you noticed the recent lu/orctf announcement for the netherlands 1000 line trial...

Sounds like the netherlands is getting pretty serious... and orctf has a great partner (and maybe the inside track)... found it interesting that the adsl equipment sounded like it was all orctf... Even a thousand lines should add to the bottom line, tho as the trial is underway... no doubt much of the revenue has already been booked...

hans' post from a month ago seems to imply that the next step could be rampup..:

>>...I talked to the maneger that organizes the test and he said that if the test results are positive all of the Netherlands will be a market for KPN. KPN is a former state company that became a public company only a few years ago. They still own about 95% of the provate household market in the Netherlands (a total of probably 6 to 8 million connections). .... The KPN guy told me that they were only used for testing and no deals were yet made with any other company for one of the most important reasons to choose for a specific ADSL supplier would be speed and volume of delivery the supplier can make...<<<
Message 2726442

With lu's involvement believe the netherlands looks that much better ... don't expect changes from either partner for the next stage... as press release read: "jointly selected"- probably both are important to ptt telecom... Would expect that when the time comes to make the pitch on the next round, that lu/orctf will step up and say something to the effect that... " We make a great team, world class networking and telecommunication skills coupled with bleeding edge xdsl expertise... we know your telecommunications systems inside and out from top to bottom. We have successfully worked together with you in the past, and together we can reassure you that ramp-up will run smoothly and as promised. "...

not a bad pitch (or team)... :)

On the issue of speed and volume of delivery (of equipment), lu no doubt can cover their responsibilities and should be able to give believeable reassurances for all...

On orctf specifics: would think the pending distributer announcement/coupled with new silicon should take care of modems...

Don't understand tho how manufacturing of other equipment (dslams) would be handled... for the usa seems like fujitsu will take care of it.... for siemens, again seems like such would be primarily their responsibility... In this case tho, it doesn't sound like lu, but rather orctf... sounds great for margins, but .... how??

Am not particularly worried as orctf and lu no doubt have plans/options in place... and orctf has figured out how to get their hdsl equipment built in volume... suppose they might turn to these same hdsl resources for adsl equipment... or maybe play some politics and cut a deal with a Dutch Co? Any thoughts?

btw... as of late 96/early 97 orctf was supplying "its HDSL modems to ... Telefonica Spain (in partnership with Lucent Technologies)..." can the pattern repeat?... bet some are working on it.... :)

thanks
