I don't think anyone believes this is a "good" plan. At the same time, we as a nation have to start somewhere to put our country on equal footing with most of the modern world when it comes to health and how we deal with all the different issues. We've been a reactive nation instead of proactive in this area.

Leaving the healthcare system to be managed by the hospitals, insurance companies and doctors has not been effective, IMO.

I expect many missteps and false starts but I firmly believe we need to move in a direction that changes the current dynamics.

One of my closest friends is a surgeon who is caught in the middle of trying to grow his business and fighting the government (local, state and federal) with almost every move his business makes. The hospital lobby is one of the worst and they are doing everything they can to keep competition to a minimum, thereby keeping their rates as high as possible. Without some compromise or intervention or oversight by the electorate (ie government), the entrenched status quo can not be improved.
