Not about to to have traveled so far just to be turned back because of some gridlock in the U.S. House, the veterans—many of them in wheelchairs—stormed right past the gates, “ pushing them over ” to get inside the memorial before a Parks Department employee relented and removed them, allowing everyone inside. But here’s where the hilarity comes in: Guess who was on hand to get all indignant about these poor veterans being shut out of the memorial built for them thanks to the government’s inexcusable shutdown? House Republicans! Yep, that’s right: On hand we had Tea Partier Michele Bachmann who came rushing over to save the day when she heard the commotion. “The last thing we should see in America is a barricade for World War II veterans to be prevented from coming to their memorial,” she tells CNN . “America is not shutting down. If we have anything to say about it, we’re going to keep this open.” Also on hand was the Obama-hater Steve King, who said this was just a “slow down, not a shutdown,” and blamed the Parks closing on Obama personally (duh) saying it was “perhaps the most bitter, spiteful act ever committed by a commander-in-chief” even though the House GOP voted to shut down the government. Democrats including Harry Reid also scrambled to get out in front of the PR debacle and look like the more sincere champions of America’s Greatest Generation. But Michele Bachmann dialed the indignation up to 11, saying she’d be there “today, tomorrow, the next day, however long it takes” to get the memorial open to veterans. No such commitment to the sick, young and poor unable to access health care, however.
