So, why should their income be dependent on how much you make? Just because they're public workers? If the private sector still had unions, the median salary would be higher at this point.

Because what you make goes into the pot to determine what are average wages and what income is needed to survive reasonably well in the Bay area. Why is that not obvious to you?
