Read Replies (2) | Respond to of 125163 A democrat friend of mine e-mailed me something just like this the other day. She has been an Obama supporter (and may still be), and yet complains about the growth of entitlements all the time, and is now also complaining about the government shutdown. I replied, to her last e-mail: Seniors don’t look at their Social Security payments as ‘handouts’ from the government since they paid into that trust fund all of their working lives. Welfare recipients, on the other hand, look at their welfare checks as kindness and largesse from a caring government. As a result, those checks are a means of buying votes. That is why so many leftist politicians have been working for five decades to increase the number of people dependent on government for everything from food on the table to healthcare. It insures major, continuing support at the ballot box. The barriers to reaping rewards for productive work in the private sector are increasing dramatically, while the perks from going on the public dole or into government paper-shuffling jobs are rising. The requirements to receive Social Security Disability payments were dramatically revised this year causing a marked increase in people claiming disability and adding to the Social Security drain. The number of Food Stamp recipients has more than doubled since Obama took office in 2009 (from 22 million to 48 million). All of this insures that those in power have an enormous voting base thanks to the ballooning entitlements, all paid for on the backs of hard-working Americans. It makes me angry (vast understatement) that so many of these left-leaning politicians claim to have the good of the common man at the core of their political philosophy, when actually all that they are doing is enslaving larger and larger portions of the population to government control. It’s all about power.
