Looks like SUN is continuing to expand its UNIX workstation business, even as SGI seems to be showing weakness in this market. I find this perplexing, since as far as I can see, SGI has better machines for roughly the same price. Is this just marketing failure?

It looks to me like even if SGI loses its bit for low-end machine business, the supercomputer side looks very good, and could probably carry the company at present price levels.

However, SGI's efforts may still pay off: press releases today suggest SGI is continuing to pave the road for Windows offerings and cross-platform support, and I found this announcement:

biz.yahoo.com

-- uncharacteristicly "low-end" from SGI. Also, expect the announcement of an NT machine to be good for a small pop in prices.

Incidently, I've said this before -- but I think the "Silicon Graphics" name is hurting the company by making it appear to be a niche player. I think the company should change its name, probably simply to "SGI." (I'm sure they will all rush to comply!)

I have seen no recent insider buying. Anybody else watching for this?

A week ago somebody posted a link to the "Talk is Cheap" column of Mercury News -- suggesting that another bad quarter and layoffs were at hand. This cost me a couple of fingernails. Anybody have a comment on this article?

I am not sure that we'll see a new CEO announcement anytime soon. I'll bet we wait another six months for that. --JD
