Its not just that targeted cuts would be better than "across the board" cuts; its also that the "across the board" cuts ignore a majority of federal spending, including the largest part (Social Security) and the large parts that are most likely to be a problem down the road (Medicare, Medicaid, Interest). (Note I do think interest should be left out of any automatic cuts.)

Still its better than nothing.
