I don't think we've had a President who was universally respected since Truman. Or maaaaybe Eisenhower. If Kennedy hadn't been shot, I wonder if he'd be as lionized today as he is. Not that I'm trying to put him down.

Relax, T.R.!!! I have not stumbled on any Clinton supporters in a couple of years, not even in San Francisco, and I know a few people who really liked him until they were disillusioned. In fact, recently I heard a talk-show host say that if Nixon had had the skill of Clinton's staff and attorneys in obtructing justice, he would have served out his second term, and I thought that was funny because it is so true!!!

I think perhaps what we don't have anymore is a liberal, almost radical group of mostly college students who protest loudly (because more of them are conservative or uninterested in politics), no Buddhist monks willing to annihilate themselves for a cause, no unjust war or horrible economy putting everyone on edge, and basically much more cynicism among the public, so anything goes in the presidency.

I would also agree with Alex that I don't think Kennedy would have even been elected, since paradoxically we want to KNOW much more about our presidents, even though we don't much seem to care what they do in office. But Kennedy's election was bought by his daddy and engineered by the Mafia, including the West Virginia primary according to the interesting ABC show last week, so in a fairer world he would not have been elected. Not that Nixon wouldn't have done the same thing if he could have figured out how to, though!!
