Defense has gone from a post WWII high of over 70% of federal spending to Reagan's high of in the low thirties, to a twenty first century high of almost 25% to the low twenties now, and without any unexpected defense spending increase, soon to be in the teens.

Its not what's driving the debt even today and its a declining problem in to the future. For political and to an extent practical reasons I wouldn't oppose making what gets called "cuts" in Washington (reductions in future planned growth), but you could make actual cuts in defense all the way to zero and the entitlements would still be unaffordable.
