I write calls against virtually all stocks in my portfolio. I hold a diversified collection of Dividend Champions for income purposes, intend to hold them forever, and don't care if the share prices drop as long as the dividend payouts continue to grow. I write calls for extra income, not for downside protection. I also own some high flyers (AAPL, GOOG, etc) and learned the hard way to not write covered calls against them, unless I wish to see them get called away - much too volatile.
