Yes, I multi boot with 32 bit XP too. I have a number of programs that will only run with stand alone XP such as Alcohol Pro, early purchased versions of Paragon, and some others. They need to be able to get into the environment outside of the operating system so will not work with Win 7 “XP mode” or in virtual machines.

I run Win 7 64bit and that makes use of extra RAM. The processor you have bought is also designed for 64 bit processing.

Win 7 has XP mode too, it works fine, but I don't bother with it and run freebie VM ware instead that allows me to run all sorts of operating systems inside of Win 7. That is very handy with the likes of AVS4YOU where you can buy a lifetime membership that discontinues as soon as you upgrade to a new PC. I have the full suit on a virtual machine forever.

If your dual booting, it might be worth considering making the transition to 64 bit computing with win 7. Once you have the RAM and the raw processing power, you can run several virtual 32 bit XP machines at once inside of Win 7 as well. Keep all those old XP licences !!!. If you have tons of applications (as I do) you can split them over several XP virtual machines so you don't have a single machine loaded with them all.

I wont bother with installing any more 32 bit systems from here on out. I have all my legacy 32 bit applications running on either XP boot or a virtual machine.

64 bit computing is like driving on the freeway instead of a back road. You can run tons of stuff at once. I only have 4GB of RAM, enough to run one sizable virtual XP machine inside of Win 7 while running all my 64 bit stuff. My next machine will have at least 32GB of RAM for the purposes of running many virtual machines at once. For Win 7 editions, from professional to ultimate you can have up to 192 GB of RAM fitted !!! -g-

Win 7 Bit locker (encryption of HD’s) and other advanced features maybe are worth considering too if you like that sort of thing. Laptops certainly need advanced security if they are going to travel.

Thanks for the links. I have speedfan, but always looking to improve things with my next PC. I like compact simple software solutions if possible.
