RE:independents constitute much larger percentage of the electorate than social conservatives

False. Conservatives are the largest ideological group.

gallup.com
Political ideology in the U.S. held steady in 2011, with 40% of Americans continuing to describe their views as conservative, 35% as moderate, and 21% as liberal. This marks the third straight year that conservatives have outnumbered moderates, after more than a decade in which moderates mainly tied or outnumbered conservatives.

1. It all depends on what we consider independents. Maybe I didn't make myself clear, but millions of people side with democrats only because republicans press on social issues. And after that they adopt all other democrat's agendas and call themselves democrats. If republicans officially move to the center on social issues - those democrats will be in play.
Same for the media. If republican party moves to the center on social issues - they would get some of the MSM on their side. And that itself will bring millions of voters.

2. See #1. It is those who call themselves democrats we are talking about in addition to those who think they are independent.

3. Not a good example since there is a huge number of government workers and contractors live in VA and they hate an idea of smaller government.
