Yes, I was at IBM in '85 in the PC area. The only competitor talked about was Apple. Amazing isn't it. Doesn't seem like that long ago. I still wish apple would have won. Was using the Mac in late 80's. So easy to use and the operating system made sense.

AOL is not analagous to the Mac, because AOL's proprietary architecture is not essential to their product.

Everything on AOL can be done in HTML, and the AOL guys are perfectly capable of making the switch. Its not that tough, we're talking six months soup to nuts. Probably take them longer to renegotiate their supplier contracts than it will to write the new code.

They're just waiting for the advertising market to mature a little, to the point where the benefits of widening their audience outweigh the benefits of posting higher subscriber figures.

They won't preannounce the switch to HTML, because their subscriber numbers would fall off a cliff.
