I've said over and over again that republicans are pathetic and dishonest for their comments and policies on debt. But that doesn't for a second mean that republicans were always awful. Reagan did do good things - so did Nixon plus all the other you mention. The one exception is Bush/Cheney which I have also said over and over again is - I believe - the worst President ever. EVER!

The debt increase under Reagan just was not the same! In fact the issue of SS which was addressed under his administration put that program on solid footing for many decades. It is now Obama who has chipped away at SS funding and put it on shaky ground. ..........Even Congress has finally come to the realization with the passage of the budget that the two sides can talk to each other and accomplish something. Something I have taken an awful beating here for suggesting. We all need to stop grandstanding and pretending that one side is always right and has the only answers and solution. I believe those people - on the left and the right - are going to become isolated and their ideological issues largely ignored as a more pragmatic approach is the way forward - as evidenced by the Budget deal passed yesterday.

I should have said either recent Republican or kept it to conservatives. As you know the Republican party before the early 1900's was the liberal party. Lincoln and TR were progressives.

The parties changed places after TR with Wilson being the first liberal Dem. Coolidge, Harding and Hoover were all hard core right wingers, exactly like the ones you are seeing today.

We need to educate the right wing that in the 1800's the Republican party was the liberal party; and in the 1900's the Democratic party was the liberal party.

"a republican never did a good thing"

That's not true. Lincoln did GREAT things for America. So did TR. Even Eisenhower did good things. Any (R) starting with Reagan? Not so much. The last (R) president? The bad FAR outweighs the good, so much even his fellow (R) wish he'd never lived and try to pretend he didn't
