in retrospect I wish we could have designed a barer bones major medical plan that covered people for just the big stuff and required them to purchase that instead of these policies loaded up with frills/extras. If along with that we included the options that were available for extra fees for people who wanted them (maternity care etc.); then, I think, but am not sure, we would not be saddled with as much subsidization by one group (the healthy) for the other (the sick) and that would go down easier.

The truth is that the healthy have always subsidized the unhealthy.

Always.

And we all have subsidized gargantuan salaries for a fair number of people in the medical sector. And a great deal of arbitrary pricing that makes absolutely no sense. And a great deal of waste. And a large number of medical errors (the third largest cause of death in this country).

With only occasional minor bitching about it.

So let's not pretend that somehow Obamacare is the cause of our problems in the delivery of health care in the country, OK? Or that somehow gov'ment caused all of this. That is simply BS.

People are bitching now because it is change, and a small group of influential Republicans want, as they always do, the lowest possible taxes for themselves. They want government out of their lives--except of course when they don't.

You've come to the nub of it Bentway IMHO. Will Americans tolerate paying more for the other guy? We should know the answer within the next year.

We all already do this. It's called Medicare and Medicaid and Social Security and unemployment benefits and the full panoply of safety net features.

Not even debatable.

I take a different view than Steve. He thinks insuring me makes his plan cost more than it should. I say EXCLUDING me let his plan cost LESS than it should for years. My exclusion subsidized HIM.

The basic principle of insurance is that the majority of uninjured subsidize the injured, on the theory that EVERYONE suffers some injury at some point in their life.

The mistake we made here was letting insurance companies make the rules in the first place. Obama has righted that.
