"This concept of "subsidization" is a "Johnny come lately" to our culture don't you think? Against it are centuries of the concept of American rugged Individualism and people taking care of themselves."

That's a ridiculous right-wing fantasy. We've subsidized things since the founding or our republic. Our biggest welfare whores today are corporations. We've subsidized homeowners for decades by letting them deduct their mortgage interest. We subsidized the internet by letting things be sold on it without being taxed. We subsidize things and groups all the time.

Let me think about this and get back to you. Off the top I think we got into the subsidy business rather recently as a government--in relative sense. My point being it was a relative new phenomena in the culture contrasting against our pioneer values. There is no question you are right currently about us as a people/government subsidizing all kinds of entities.

The thing the AFCA does though is put that subsidy right in the consumers face in his rate--as opposed to just sending off his federal taxes into the unknown to fund whatever.
