Doug, you picked up a very good company - STone, actually this is a few chinese PC companies I want to own for 5 - 10 years, but unfortunately my rule is only buy A-Share stocks from the chinese domestic stock market, STone has not offer it's IPO on china A-Share market yet, so I can only dream to own it now <g>, other companies like Legend Holdings Ltd, Great Wall Computer ect. are also on my favorite list, Legend is in the same situation like STone, it is not too bad I can build my position on Great Wall Computer and a few other
companies. The ownships of PC above the 586 model level in china I think are less than 0.5%, it is not a dream the chinese PC market could expand 30-50 times in 10 years, the companies like Legend, STone, Great Wall Computer most likely will survive. In first three quarters this year, PC unit shipments jumped 66% in china, it should be good news for U.S companies, but Intel seems to be very few companies benefited from this exploding market, the companies like Compaqe, HP, IBM are losing the PC wars to chinese PC companies (PCs cost are 1/3 lower) in China, their sale revenues are even lower than those numbers of last year (acually I got two different imformation about these numbers, I chose the convicing one because I saw them on the chinese newspapers). After becoming the number one PC maker of 1996 in china, Legend Holdings Ltd's sales incressed another 150% in first three quarters this year.(I heard CPQ would be in cooperation with STOne next year to compete with Legend).
It makes me wonder what will happen if the chinese PC market could not satisfy these chinese PC maker's stomachs any more, probably in 3-4 years.
Happy Investing,
Gordon Shen
