<<Always two way cable for all of them. >>

haha (your nickname's nickname, much easier to type),

Thanks for your thoughtful & comprehensive response. But I know I've heard of cable modem services that also require POTS modems running alongside them. Anyone else heard of them? Maybe I OD'd on ibuprofen and hallucinated.

<<Always two way cable for all of them>>

I think you are correct as it relates to @Home, but there are quite a few systems using a telco return.

<<Downstream is always considerably more fast than upstream partially because you don't have the equipment that the sender has>>

Has much more to do with bandwidth allocation than equipment. Symetric systems have identical throughput speeds up and down; asymmetric systems have more down and less up. Different modem vendors supply different products in this regard.

<<the telcos have already set a precedent on this when the Communications Act was passed. The telcos own the wires, but they have to let competitors rent usage of them>>

You assume that cable will be designated a common carrier, which I don't believe will happen. However, @Home and Road Runner/MediaOne will probably be delivered via wireless in the not too distant future, in which case users will have a choice regardless of who their cable operator is. For now, when talking about "competition" from Road Runner/MediaOne, it's important to remember that @Home equity partners (TCI, Cox, Cablevision and Comcast) and their affiliates have almost 30 million customers. MediaOne and TW have about 17 million.
