Hi Spek,

I owned this in the past, has a rich history. At one point they had huge position in BNSF now a part of Berkshire Hathaway. This was before Buffett bought in. Looks like some directors have recently bought in. Very Berkshire-esque, Insurer with over 60 equity positions and a hand full of non operating companies. Very well run holding co. Thanks Speck for putting it back on my radar.

BB

Y - it had only 9% book/share growth in last 10 years. Not terribly bad, but also not great. For a "mini Berkshire" the result below regular (re)insurance companies is nothing to brag about...

It is somewhat cheap though.

I added a slog of Y (Alleghany) @371.X$. This insurer is cheaper than comparable peers like MKL.

Added KMI warrants @3.13$.

New buys BBD @10.65$ (Brazilian bank) and some MUSA @38.25$ (spinoff). I also bought a bunch DANOY @13.71$ (a day early :-( ..) to replace my NSRGY sale from a while ago. Looking to add more to this stalwart.

Hey Spek,
Are you still holding Allegheny (Y) @581$ trading at .92 book which is $525 p/s

"Found a liking in Y (Allegheny) @376$ and bought a starter position. This is a mini Berkshire insurance holding with some equity holdings. Book should exceed 400$/share by now and I think Y has rarely lower than 0.9x book. Right now, the price is 0.94x book (based on the balance sheet from 9/30/2013). This is simple low risk book value compounder."
