This is an excellent post, very thought provoking and a refreshing diversion from looking at the problem in a partisan way. Nowhere is this more evident than in my own family where my better half in born and raised from immigrant grandparents, and I immigrant with an engineering degree fro the (MIT of India). My two sons went to public schools and they were never pushed to go out and achieve something. Their ideals, their ambitions, their morals were not set by their school teachers. Whereas in my case, the Jesuit priests set those for me (and I am not even a Christian). I am of the firm belief that these children need to be pushed even in setting their ideals and ambitions.

I am almost to the end of reading Steve Jobs book. Not all students are Steve or for that matter Wozniaks. Kids in India and China do not have access to video games to play on their home computers. Home computers are expensive and getting them fixed is even more expensive. Parents allow the use of computers "as long as they are used for furthering their career, degrees and employment prospects."

Towards the end of the post, what is said about America and Americans is very true. Unlike other countries, Americans are admired worldwide for their ability to pull together in times of crisis and outshine the rest to rise to the top. We do have that opportunity now. And we can do so if we stop being that partisan.

Thanks again for that post and I hope you continue to bring many more.

Finally, impulse control runs against the grain of contemporary culture as well. Countless books and feel-good movies extol the virtue of living in the here and now, and people who control their impulses don’t live in the moment. The dominant culture is fearful of spoiling children’s happiness with excessive restraints or demands. By contrast, every one of America’s most successful groups takes a very different view of childhood, inculcating habits of discipline from a very early age — or at least they did so when they were on the rise.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the apparent fact noted in an article I posted last week where 50% of black men and 40% of white men in this country have been arrested by the age of 23.

The point of this example is not, “See, it’s easy to climb out of poverty in America.” On the contrary, Justice Sotomayor’s story illustrates just how extraordinary a person has to be to overcome the odds stacked against her
.

I love this comment. It takes a lot to overcome the BS.

Good article you posted.

Just finished reading the book "The Triple Package" which this This is a book review of. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. This book provides the clue to why African Americans who were brought as slaves remain poor whereas immigrants from Africa are doing better than the African American. According to the book, Obama's ancestors were immigrants and not slaves .

Slavery destroyed the pride of the slaves. And once the pride is destroyed and they are forced into economic ruin, it is not easy to restore that pride. And in this climate of hate red and scorn displayed by Tea party, it adds fuel to the fire.
